What is hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is a type of dialysis in which blood passes through a filter outside your body, is cleansed, and then returned to your body. This is done either at the dialysis center or home.

Learn more about hemodialysis:

Before starting hemodialysis, a blood vessel called an arteriovenous fistula (AV fistula) usually forms in your arm. This blood vessel is created by connecting an artery to a vein. The connection of the vein and the artery to each other makes the blood vessel bigger and stronger. This facilitates the transfer of blood to the dialysis machine and its return to the body. Arteriovenous fistula surgery is usually performed 4 to 8 weeks before the start of hemodialysis. This repairs the tissue and skin around the fistula. If your blood vessels are too narrow to make an arteriovenous fistula, an alternative called an AV graft may be recommended. In this method, a piece of artificial tube is used to connect the artery to the vein. A neck vein may be used as a short-term or emergency measure. In this procedure, a small tube is inserted into a vein in your neck.
